About Pennsylvania Smartweed

Pennsylvania Smartweed is a water-loving annual that is commonly found on mudflats of freshwater and moderately brackish areas. It thrives in most soil types except droughty sites. It has pink or rose-colored flowers that bloom in the Spring.

This plant is excellent for waterfowland wintering pheasants. It provides food for ducks, geese, bobwhites, mourning doves, and pheasants; as well as, cover for their young. Mice, racoons, muskrat, and squirrels will eat the seeds and sometimes the plants.

Seeds should be planted in Spring right after the last frost, or later in the season if being used for a waterfowl food source.
