Floodplain Mix

Helps transform easily flooded areas into beautiful prairie.
A perennial mix of grasses with standing water tolerance for re-establishment of damaged floodplains

About Floodplain Mix

Use this mix of deep-rooted, perennial grasses to re-establish damaged floodplains. It contains grasses with different levels of standing water tolerance and can withstand seasonal flooding. It is recommended for use along fluctuating shorelines, on dams, and for lowland pasture.

Tolerance to Inundation:

  • Big Bluestem - 7-14 days
  • Canada Wildrye - 15-30 days
  • Eastern Gamagrass - 45 days
  • Fox Sedge - 60 days
  • Indiangrass 3-5 days
  • Switchgrass  -15-30 days
  • Virginia Wildrye - 60 days
  • Western Wheatgrass - 60 days

Plant in spring or domant seed in late fall; use increased rates when wet conditions dictate broadcast seeding. Temperature, soil type, water depth and age of stand all influence the grasses' tolerance to flooding, a.k.a. inundation. Plants are more tolerant to flooding during early spring than hot summer months.
