A perennial, emergent aquatic plant with 1-5 feet long linear leaves. Reproduces via seed or clonal offsets. Prefers full sun but can handle partial sun. Giant Bur Reed grows in wet, muddy, sandy, or gravelly soils including those covered by 1-2 feet of water. Exists in marshes, swamps, pond borders, and slow moving creeks, streams, and rivers. Likes less disturbed areas with rich, fertile soil and mineral rich waters. Seeds are readily consumed by ducks and other waterfowl. Muskrats consume the entire plant.
